CORDIS-EU spotted InnovaXN & Streamline projects!

CORDIS is the Community Research and Development Information Service, the European Commission’s primary source of results from the projects funded by the EU’s framework programmes for research and innovation, from FP1 to Horizon Europe.

Its main mission is to bring research results to professionals in the field to foster open science, create innovative products and services and stimulate growth across Europe. CORDIS has a rich and structured public repository with all project information held by the European Commission such as project factsheets, participants, reports, deliverables and links to open-access publications.

CORDIS is managed by the Publications Office of the European Union on behalf of the European Commission’s research and innovation Directorates-General, Executive Agencies and Joint Undertakings, supported by specialised contractors for editorial, data and technical services.

But why did CORDIS feature the EU projects InnovaXN, Streamline, CALIPSOplus and ParisRegionFP, of which 3 of them are ESRF based?

Largely considered Rembrandt’s most famous work, ‘The Night Watch’ was completed in 1642 and is the largest surviving work of art he ever created. Today it is displayed in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. In 2019, an international research team joined forces in Operation Night Watch, the largest research and conservation project ever undertaken for this masterpiece.

And it was through the support of the EU Projects mentioned above that the team sought answers on how the artist painted ‘The Night Watch’, the painting’s current condition and how it could be best preserved for future generations.

Using ESRF X-ray powder diffraction and infrared microscopy, the team was able to identify lead formate in several areas of the painting: this is the first time that this compound has been detected in historical oil paints.
